Diarrhea, or loose, watery bowel movements, is one of the most common childhood illnesses. A number of different things, such as viruses, bacteria, can cause it or even viruses and bacteria combined. Although diarrhea can be annoying, it is not dangerous to your child's health.
How to protect children from diarrhea
Children get diarrhea mainly because of eating contaminated food, drinking
contaminated water and the lack of sanitation in the surroundings.
Germs, viruses and bacteria usually cause diarrhea. These germs are
sensitive to heat, so keeping your child's stool warm is the best way to ward
off many strains of diarrhea. This can be done by holding their head in a cup
of warm water for a few minutes before feeding them or using a heating pad next
to your child's bed.
Children can get dehydrated very quickly. The best way to protect children
is to teach them how to drink water before getting dehydrated. Adding 1
teaspoon of salt per cup of water adds minerals and helps neutralize the bad
taste of chlorine.
We recommend each child to drink 2-4 Oz of water in the hour before each
meal. If a child gets diarrhea, we recommend you give 1 tsp of rice or other
cereal and a packet of Pedialyte on an empty stomach every 3 hours.
